When creating a new Project, you can specify whether to start the Unity Editor in 2D mode or 3D mode. However, you also have the option of switching the Editor between 2D mode and 3D mode at any time. You can read more about the difference between 2D and 3D Projects here. This page provides information about how to change modes, and what exactly changes within the editor when you do.
To change modes between 2D or 3D mode:
2D or 3D mode determines some settings for the Unity Editor as follows:
| Setting | 2D mode | 3D mode |
|---|---|---|
| Images | Imported images are assumed to be 2D images (Sprites) and set to SpriteA 2D graphic objects. If you are used to working in 3D, Sprites are essentially just standard textures but there are special techniques for combining and managing sprite textures for efficiency and convenience during development. More info See in Glossary mode. |
Any images you import aren’t assumed to be sprites. |
| Scene View | Set to 2D mode. | Set to 3D mode. |
