The Noise mask applies a pseudo-random output to your brush: a combination of a noise type and a fractal type. Adding noise to a brush adds variety to your brush set without adding brushes. Noise is a good way to create a non-uniform, natural look for your terrain, which you can then refine with other tools.

Tip: The Paint Details tool has its own noise definitions, which are available when you select the grass or detail mesh. Refer to Grass and other details. The Paint Trees tool has its own settings, which include some noise options. Refer to Add trees to the terrain.
