How to contribute to Unity

A guide for open-source contributors

This guide provides help and support for Unity users who might not have participated in an open-source project before.

Unity uses distributed version controlA system for managing file changes. You can use Unity in conjunction with most common version control tools, including Perforce, Git, Mercurial and PlasticSCM. More info

to version open-source components. This means that you make changes and contribute them to Unity through the following process:

  1. Sign in to or create a new account on github.com
  2. Go to github.com/Unity-Technologies and find the public project you want to contribute to.
  3. Read the readme file in the repository to see if the project takes contributions and, if so, how to best do it.
  4. Follow the instructions in the readme file.
